Empowering Youth for Sustainable Natural Resource Governance

A call has been made for the empowerment of youths in the natural resource sector to tap on their fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and boundless enthusiasm, to foster responsible mining practices and sustainable natural resource governance.

Recognizing the vital role of youth in shaping the future of natural resource governance, the Centre for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG) on the 7th of March 2024 organized a dynamic capacity-building workshop in Hwange.

The workshop aimed to foster youth inclusion in decision-making processes, provide access to information and education and actively involve young people in the creation and implementation of policies governing natural resources.

“We firmly believe that youth empowerment is key to building a sustainable future for our natural resources,” said Tracy Mutowekuziva CNRG’s Deputy Programs Manager while speaking to the WEEKLY.

“By providing young people with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to engage in decision-making processes, we are fostering a generation of informed and active leaders who will champion the sustainable management of our natural resources.”

The workshop, held at the DDC’s office hall, brought together passionate youth from diverse backgrounds who are keen to make a positive impact on the sustainable management of natural resources in their communities.

Participants were equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills, and tools to actively participate in decision-making processes related to natural resource governance. Through interactive sessions, panel discussions, and practical exercises, the workshop covered various aspects, including:

Youth Engagement: The importance of involving young people in the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs and policies related to natural resource governance. Participants explored strategies for effectively engaging with decision-makers, advocating for their rights, and creating platforms for youth voices to be heard.

Access to Information: The workshop emphasized the significance of providing young people with accurate and up-to-date information about natural resources, environmental conservation, and legal frameworks. Participants learned how to navigate information sources, analyze data, and utilize evidence-based approaches to contribute meaningfully to discussions and decision-making processes.

Education and Capacity Building: Recognizing that knowledge is power, the workshop focused on enhancing the participants’ understanding of natural resource governance. They gained insights into sustainable practices, conservation techniques, and the socioeconomic impacts of resource management. Practical training sessions equipped them with the skills to implement community-based projects and campaigns.

Networking and Collaboration: The workshop provided a platform for young individuals passionate about natural resource governance to connect and collaborate. Participants had the opportunity to network with experts, practitioners, and fellow youth advocates, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. These connections will enable ongoing support, mentorship, and collaborative initiatives beyond the workshop.

The workshop concluded with participants expressing their enthusiasm and commitment to applying the knowledge and skills gained during the event. They shared their aspirations to contribute meaningfully to natural resource governance in their respective communities, advocating for sustainable practices and driving positive change.

CNRG’s youth capacity-building workshop in Hwange is a testament to their dedication to fostering youth inclusion in natural resource governance. By investing in the next generation of leaders, CNRG aims to create a more sustainable and equitable future, where young people have a seat at the table and their ideas are valued and implemented.

With ongoing support and continued efforts to engage youth in decision-making processes, the workshop will serve as a catalyst for positive change, empowering young advocates to shape the trajectory of natural resource governance in Hwange and beyond.
