Ecofeminist training empowers women to combat environmental degradation

The Centre for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG) recently held a two-day ecofeminist training for women in the Midlands and Mashonaland East provinces. This convening was supported by Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung and the Southern Africa Trust (SAT).

This crucial initiative aims to empower women living in the resource-rich areas of Manhize, where iron and steel extraction activities are upending livelihoods. It aims to tackle intertwined issues of environmental degradation and gender inequality.

In a community where fear, political repression, intimidation, and subjugation of community rights are prevalent, these workshops offer a beacon of hope. They provide a platform for women to unite, learn, and develop strategies to confront these challenges head-on.

These workshops will prepare participants to take on leadership roles within their communities by enhancing their understanding of ecofeminism and equipping them with practical skills. They will be empowered to advocate for a future that is both sustainable and equitable.

Tracy Mutowekuziva, CNRG programs manager, said that by raising awareness among women in mining areas, they build the capacity of communities to mobilize and advocate for environmental and gender justice.

“We aim to develop leadership skills in women so that they become effective advocates for both environmental and gender justice. Our strategic intervention not only equips women with knowledge we want to foster solidarity and collective action among women in Manhize to address local environmental challenges,” she said.
