AFRICAN PEOPLES COUNTER COP (ONLINE SESSION)

September 19, 2023 @ 11:00 - 12:00

Africa bears the brunt of climate and intersecting crises despite minimal historical contribution to climate change. The global North’s main contributors due to harmful practices, shield themselves. Rising temperatures, irregular rainfall-induced droughts, floods, and rising sea levels impact the environment, health, and economy. Food insecurity, disease spread, and biodiversity loss persist. Climate change triggers migration and conflicts, heightening insecurity. Growing natural hazards, fossil fuel demand, COP27 resolutions, and IPCC Report urgency demand united action by African climate justice activists across all levels. Accountability from global North governments, corporations, and elites profiting from the crisis is essential to address Africa’s climate impacts.

The ACJC will conduct a hybrid-style event that will feature online sessions and People’s Assemblies to be held throughout the African region between 18 and 29 September 2023.
The People’s Assemblies that will be hosted at the community or national level will develop their own programmes which will resonate with the theme of the Counter COP – It is Time to Reflect, Resist and Rise Up for Climate Justice Now. Self Organized Online Sessions will be hosted by convenor organisations, partners and allies on various thematic topics and presentations that link with the theme for Counter COP 2023 Through all the sessions in the two weeks, people from around the region and globally will be able to ‘connect’ virtually with the communities that will be participating in the People’s Assemblies.

Under the African People’s Counter COP CNRG will host a session on Critical minerals, a Panacea, or a false solution to Climate Change.
