Accelerating the shift to renewable energy requires a strategic approach; the UN Guiding Principles on Critical Energy Transition Minerals provide a crucial framework and roadmap to fossil fuel phasedown.

The UN Secretary-General’s Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals published seven Guiding Principles on September 11, 2024, providing a framework for governments, businesses, civil society, and other stakeholders to promote sustainable development and environmental protection.
The adoption of guiding principles provides a framework for policymaking, ensuring responsible mineral extraction and revenue management.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says the Guiding Principles on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, emphasize the need for a renewables revolution grounded in justice, equity, and sustainability to empower resource-rich developing countries.
Guterres says the principles “ground the renewables revolution in justice and equity, so that it spurs sustainable development, respects people, protects the environment, and powers prosperity in resource-rich developing countries.”
At the Centre for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG) we value the adoption of the principles UNGP on Critical Energy Transition Minerals as they are important for several reasons, not the least to accelerate a just transition to renewable energy but also to support economic growth, social justice, and environmental protection in resource-rich developing countries.
As we advocate for justice and dignity for communities affected by extractive industries, we are alive to the exposure of rural communities to an avalanche of rights violations. Our research work provides a comprehensive overview of mining governance challenges in Zimbabwe, inclusive of increased Chinese investment in critical minerals.
This provides a vantage point for us to push our philosophy at CNRG to protect communities and empower them to demand responsible mining practices, protecting human rights and the environment.
The seven principles of the Guiding Principles on Critical Energy Transition Minerals are as follows:
- Human rights must be at the core of all mineral value chains.
- The integrity of the planet, its environment, and its biodiversity must be safeguarded.
- Justice and equity must underpin mineral value chains.
- Development must be fostered through benefit sharing, value addition, and economic diversification.
- Investments, finance, and trade must be responsible and fair.
- Transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption measures are necessary to ensure good governance.
- Multilateral and international cooperation must underpin global action and promote peace and security.
It is our fervent hope that by adopting these principles, stakeholders- governments, businesses, and civil society, can contribute to a more sustainable, climate-resilient future.
