Centre For Natural Resource Governance, has put forward a restoration matrix for survivors of the Cyclone Idai disaster who are still facing daily struggles four years after the calamity.
Alongside its implementing partners in TaCCET, CNRG last week hosted a disaster preparedness workshop for Manicaland stakeholders and a National People’s COP with the Chimanimani Community.
The COP was centered on creating a platform for solidarity with survivors of Cyclone Idai and offer them a platform to share their lived realities. Through real-life stories, the support gaps that still exist and need addressing were laid bare.
The COP was also a platform to commemorate the lives lost during the disaster and raise awareness of climate change disasters.
Major issues from Chimanimani are centered around the gaps in response strategies adopted during and post the cyclone.
CNRG is accordingly putting forward the following restoration matrix:
- Efficient early warning systems and communication platforms
- Fully equipped rescue centers (medication and food)
- The need for free and continuous Psycho-social support for survivors.
- Compensation for homes, clinics, and schools lost during the cyclone and a plan to rebuild better.
- Repatriation of bodies that were swept into Mozambique.
- Training of local youths as first responders
- Establishment of a Climate Fund like the Aids Levy for rescue operations and rebuilding ruined lives.
The People’s COP highlighted many gaps in the government’s response strategy and presented an opportunity for future advocacy engagements with the community and duty-bearers.
